I will make safety training a priority under my new administration. Encouragement and support of members wishing to take advance safety courses will be the focus. In my last term we awarded brown work jackets with the names of the completed safety courses embroidered on the back. I commit to restarting this program provided that the membership approves the expenditure. The jackets would be recognition of our union’s commitment to a safer workplace. They would be a fair reward for individuals who are willing to donate their time to educate themselves to a higher level of safety awareness. I will also bring back the advanced safety course for the Job Stewards. Many of you took this training in my last administration. The course was well received and featured speakers from the OH&S department of government and the Workers Compensation Board.
I will explore the possibilities of delivering safety training over the internet. This will give you the member, an opportunity to learn while at home or working out of town. Many members have already upgraded their safety credentials on their own time and expense. I will make it a priority to promote the expertise of these people at every opportunity possibly through advertising. I would once again attempt to work with OH&S on the publication of pocket size handbooks outlining workers rights and responsibilities under the OH&S Act. An educated person is an empowered person. If we can get enough people empowered we can eliminate accidents, injuries and occupational illness from the workplace forever.
Vote Dean Milton and help make it happen.
