Over half the manhours worked by our members are in the Wood Buffalo
region (Oilsands). I believe this number will increase as time goes on.
Most of the proposed Upgraders in the Redwater, Fort Saskatchewan area
have been shelved. The Extraction and Mining Facilities in the Wood Buffalo
region have not.
I believe we have a once in a life time opportunity to set down some roots in
the community of Wood Buffalo and become a permanent part of that region.
Now is the time to increase representation in the area through the immediate
hiring of another full time representative to service the Oilsands. This appointment
would be followed within six months by the appointment of a third Business Agent
for the region.
In addition to the increased staff, I propose the opening of some office space in
Ft. MacMurray. This will give us a visible presence in the community and provide
a place for our members to take care of Union business.
Over and above all that, I furthermore propose that we undertake the purchase of
land in Ft. MacMurray. This would be to accomodate construction of a full time
Education and Training Facility, the same as we have in Calgary and Edmonton.
