We are the best in the world at what we do. Our jurisdiction as it is defined by the various agreements with other Craft Unions is well deserved, because no one can do our job better that we can.

Unfortunately there are still areas that are contested by one craft or another, that rightfully belong to us. I can think of no better example of this than when another Union took us to the Court of Queens Bench in an attempt to gain jurisdiction over the Filter Houses on Cogen Boilers.

Had we lost that case it would have resulted in significant loss of employment for our members. The fact that we had always done that work did not deter the other Union from trying to claim it.

Jurisdiction is the lifeblood of every Craft Union and must be guarded with extreme vigilance. The key to success in this regard is advanced education and training.

My commitment is to arrange for Advanced Jurisdictional Training for members serving or wishing to serve as Job Stewards. This training would be over and above the current Job Stewards course, and would be specific to jurisdiction. I believe this approach would accomplish the goal of providing our members, with the knowledge they need to better protect what is ours.

I would also propose that a jurisdictional oversight committee be appointed from the membership at large. This committee would be invited to examine every mark up and submission that the local is involved in. The intent behind this approach is to give the members some insight into the mechanics of craft jurisdiction. At the same time members would be able to ensure that myself and the Business Reps were protecting their interests.
Vote Dean Milton and put the rightful Craft Jurisdiction of our members first.
