I am asking for your vote in the election for Business Manager Secretary Treasure of Boilermaker Local Lodge 146. I would like to share my own history within the Union so you can better know who I am and what experience I can bring to the office of Business Manager Secretary Treasurer.

I worked my first field job as a pre apprentice permit in 1983 at what was then the Gulf Refinery now known as Petro Canada here in Edmonton. For the next two years I sat on a list waiting to start my apprenticeship. This was an experience I think many of you have shared.

In February, 1985 I started as an apprentice at Strathcona Steel Shop now known as Dacro worked my first field job as an indentured apprentice at Syncrude in the fall of 1985. I attended all three periods of my technical training at the Westterra Institute of Technology. On February 7, 1989 I received my red seal journeyman Boilermaker ticket.

As a second generation Boilermaker whose paternal grandfather was also a lifelong Union member, I have always had a keen interest and passion for the affairs and welfare of the union. I was born and raised in a Union environment. I have a complete understanding of the benefits Unions bring to their members and by extension to society as a whole.

As an apprentice I began to attend Union meetings every chance I had. Only work out
of town prevented my attendance at a Union meeting. This is a practice I have maintained to this day.

I was first appointed a Job Steward at Daishowa Pulp Mill during the construction of
the recovery boiler at Peace River. This increased my appetite for serving the Union.
At the earliest opportunity I ran for a position on the Local Lodge Executive Board. An
older more experience member was elected to fill that position but this did not dampen
my enthusiasm. In 1991 the position of Local Lodge President became vacant. I put my name forward and was successful in receiving the endorsement of the membership to hold that office.

Thus began my seven and one half year tenure as your Local Lodge President. This period of my service began in 1991 and lasted until the spring of 1998. On January 4, 1999 I began a four and one half year term as your Business Manager Secretary Treasurer. During that time I strove to bring to office the two most important values any union can aspire, to openness and compassion. These were the hallmarks of my previous administration and I hope to bring them back to you starting
October 5, 2011.

In the past five years I have continued to work as a Boilermaker in the field. During this time I have enjoyed the pleasure of your company. I have shared your toils, lived in the same camps, eaten the same food and experienced the hardships of being away from home and family. I have kept up my attendance at Union meetings both in Edmonton and Fort McMurray. I participated in the bylaw renewal meetings that occurred since the present administration assumed office. Played a key role in helping to defeat some of resolutions from that process that were unpalatable to the membership i.e. excessive rules and amalgamation of Fitter, Rigger out of work lists.

Supported the building and construction of a new union hall and learning center in Calgary. In my opinion the greatest accomplishment this membership has ever achieved, was the democratic decision the members took to build a new Union Hall and Learning Center in Edmonton. The construction of these facilities took place during my administration. The meetings we had to gain membership approval were not without opposition. In the end eighty percent of the members present voted to proceed with the project. I believe it’s reasonable to think what worked well in Edmonton would also work well in Calgary. I applaud the members for these wise visionary decisions and am proud to call myself one of you.

In the past eight years I have watched the non Union forces capture an ever increasing share of our market. I have felt the frustrations of not achieving what many of us would consider progress in this super hot economy. I believe that my past experience as President and Business Manager Secretary Treasurer, as well as my lifelong commitment and passion for the welfare of the Union make me your best choice for the office of Business Manager Secretary Treasurer in the current election.

I am asking all of you in the spirit of open and compassionate unionism. Please give me, Dean Milton, the honour of once again serving as your Business Manager Secretary Treasurer. Vote for Dean Milton and open the door.
